Whispermat

Whispermat is specifically designed to absorb, attenuate, and dampen noise. Whispermat barrier composites combine dense, limp flexible, non-lead loaded barriers with Hushcloth© acoustical foams forming a total acoustical system. Unlike many other sound control materials available, these multilayer composites are manufactured without costly adhesives, thus eliminating the potential for adhesive failure. Designed by acoustical engineers, Whispermat achieves maximum acoustical performance economically.

Three basic principles are utilized:

  • The barrier septum is used to impede the amount of airborne sound to gain optimum transmission loss.
  • Hushcloth©acoustical foams absorb the airborne sound with a minimum of reflection. When laminated to the barrier the noise is both absorbed and isolated.
  • The composite dampens noise by reducing vibration on metal, wood, and plastic surfaces.

The wide variety of constructions makes possible engineered solutions for most OEM and in-plant applications.  Whispermat is available in single and double layer septums, various barrier weights, foam thickness and a variety of surface treatments.  Whispermat can be purchased in rolls or sheets and can be die cut or fabricated to customer specifications. These foam barrier composites are easily cut with a knife, shears or scissors.  An economical SBR pressure sensitive adhesive or an acrylic PSA, for temperatures to 200 degrees F can be applied to any Whispermat product.   It is recommended that contact adhesive or mechanical fasteners be utilized when using these heavily loaded composites.

Whispermat1

Whispermat1Whispermat1 combines a single barrier layer with a single layer of Hushcloth® acoustical foam. When the barrier is applied to sheet metal, plastic, or wood, the foam is exposed to absorb airborne noise. The barrier functions both to contain sound, and acting as a mass damper, eliminates structural vibration.

When the foam is applied to the structure the barrier is decoupled. The exposed barrier becomes a tough, durable surface with enhanced transmission loss properties. Often a facing will be laminated to the barrier to increase both durability and weatherability when used as a pipe wrap.

When a 1/4″ or 1/2″ foam decoupler is incorporated WM1 is frequently used as a carpet underlayment. When moisture is of concern, as in the case of a marine or truck cab application, closed cell foams can be used

Whispermat2

Whispermat2Whispermat2 is a sandwich composite incorporating 2 layers of Hushcloth® acoustical foam and a single barrier septum. When applied to sheet metal, plastic, or wood, the isolation foam layer, typically 1/4″ thick, decouples the barrier while the thicker absorption layer reduces airborne sound. This economical acoustical system can be formulated to provide maximum noise reduction in the harshest environment by adding various facings or embossed surfaces.
